Spirituality: An Invitation to Rediscover Your Own Definition

How does one define spirituality?

The dictionary offers a useful starting point: “characterized by an elevated sense of awareness or connection beyond the physical realm.” Yet, spirituality is as vast and varied as the traditions and individuals who attempt to describe it.

In Hinduism, spirituality centers on the unity between Atman (the soul or true self) and Brahman (the ultimate reality), often explored through practices like yoga and meditation. It seeks to realize the interconnectedness of all existence that you are inherently a part of.

In contrast, the Bwiti tradition views spirituality as inseparable from nature, ancestors, and the interconnected web of all life. Here, spirituality is not an abstract concept but a living, breathing force experienced through rituals, storytelling, and ceremonies. At the heart of this tradition is Nzambé Kana, the architect of the Bwiti cosmology, who serves as a divine creator figure connecting the physical and spiritual realms. Nzambé Kana reminds us of the sacredness of life and guides practitioners to honor and maintain harmony with the natural world.

For others, spirituality might evoke complex emotions tied to religious dogmas or the conditioning they experienced as children. This can create resistance or a sense of alienation from the very idea of spirituality, making the journey of rediscovery all the more personal and profound.

At its essence, spirituality is not something that can be fully defined or explained. Nor is it something you “do.” Rather, it is a state of being—a moment of profound presence and interconnectedness with the natural world. This is not something to be taught or imposed but something to be remembered and rediscovered within the privacy of one’s own heart.

At Root & Wisdom, we honor this deeply personal process and invite our guests to come to define their own unique meaning of spirituality through direct experience. Through Iboga, a Master Teacher in its own right, we invite our guests to explore their sense of spirituality, not just once but continuously. Iboga reminds us of where that sacred connection may have been lost and offers a guiding hand to rediscover it.

Ultimately, spirituality cannot be confined to words or actions. It is a force that animates all of nature—a truth beyond the mind, beyond logic, and beyond understanding. At Root & Wisdom, we hold space for you to find your own definition, in your own time, and in your own way.
